When Joe Pilates originally conceived of The Pilates Method, he envisioned a Mind - Body - Spirit program that would encourage the development of a more resilient individual and in fact society. He believed that by regularly using The Pilates Method (originally called Contrology) with focus, intention and precision, the conditioning process would shape the mind, toughen the body and hence develop a strong spirit. Joe Pilates, himself a sickly child, grew up in a difficult time to a family of limited means. His mission was to better his health and through that journey he found that his system of exercise would be beneficial to the population of the world.
During WWI Joe Pilates was interned on the Isle of Mann, England. During the several years he spent there, he worked with other interned people and in particular the wounded. Despite the severe conditions and the compromised condition of the wounded, those practicing The Pilates Method under Mr. Pilates’ instruction fared much better than those who didn’t during the flu pandemic of 1918. The wounded were able to exercise because Mr. Pilates used his talent as an inventor to create a variety of apparatus. He used bed springs to create pulley systems that allowed amputees and those who were bed ridden to work the musculature and skeletal system they had left. Those efforts by both Mr. Pilates as well as the injured, improved their intrinsic wellness.
You can also benefit from the Pilates apparatus that have evolved from those rudimentary, bed spring fitness tools. One of the descendants is the Pilates Tower. The Tower stands independently fixed to a wall or attached to the end of a Pilates Reformer (another fitness descendant). With the use of springs and /or pulleys, a person can condition the body in all positions e.g. on the back, stomach, sitting and standing. Teachers who have taken Pilates Certification Programs use Tower Class and private instruction with the Pilates Tower in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.
